Your Friendly Neighborhood Pharmacist

The Name Game

Names are especially important to pharmacists. We use them to identify, patients, drugs, insurance plans and a number of other things.

Drug names however, are the hardest for everyone to wrap their mouth around. No matter how hard some people try they never seem to pronounce them correctly.

Here’s the biggest tip from a pro you’ll ever get. Most of them are pronounced phonetically. Once broken down into sylables, each one of said precisely as it’s spelled. For example, simvastatin: sim va stat in. I never understand how extra letters or syllables are added to a reasonably basic word.

Perhaps people are just intimidated because they are medication names. Either way try this the next time you call in your refill and impress your tech.
